Group: E200–E299 (preservatives)
E211 is a food additive approved by the European Union (EU) and is used as an antifungal and antibacterial synthetic preservative in food products. This chemical is only effective in slightly acidic conditions.
E211 can also be used as an antiseptic.
E211 is also known by the common name sodium benzoate and, less commonly, benzoate of soda.
This preservative occurs naturally in cranberries, apples, cinnamon, cloves, plums and prunes. Allergic reactions to E211 may occur in people who suffer from asthma, the skin disease urticaria or those sensitive to aspirin.
